General Partner's Description :
The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is the national resource university funded in 1765. TUBAF specialises in interdisciplinary research and education related to raw materials, energy and materials along the entire value chain. The work group Microbiology/ Biohydrometallurgy at TUBAF has long-term experience in biohydrometallurgical process development for metal extraction including chemical and microbial monitoring. The Environmental Process Engineering group adds long-standing expertise in membrane technologies for application in seawater desalination and treatment of mining water up to high TRL.
Role in XTRACT Project :
TUBAF is coordinating the actions within the XTRACT project and is also responsible for developing and implementing an (in situ) bioleaching approach for the recovery of metals from low–grade ores and mine wastes including microbial prospecting and sulfate recycling. Membrane technology with flexible unit set up for the separation of metals from the acidic bioleach liquors will be optimized and demonstrated.
