Dr. David Barrie Johnson is Professor Emeritus at Bangor University, UK, Research Professor at Coventry University, UK, and Research Associate at the Natural History Museum, London. His expertise focuses on biotechnologies that impact the metal mining sector, including bioprocessing of primary mineral reserves and mine wastes, selective recovery of metals from mine waters, and acidophile microbiology.

I have long pioneered considering waste materials produced during historic mining as potential important reserves of valuable metals. The most effective way of re-processing these materials is to apply bio-leaching technologies, as evidenced in a number of full- and pilot-scale operations, such as that carried out in Kasese, Uganda. I fully support the research being carried out in XTRACT which aims to apply bio-leaching to mine wastes in Europe.
Professor Maria Menegaki is a faculty member at the National Technical University of Athens, School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Her expertise includes surface mine planning and design, and the assessment of environmental impacts of mining.

The importance of the XTRACT project lies in its position at the forefront of sustainable mining. The vision of XTRACT for the “Zero Emission Mine of the Future” with the integration of technologies enabling selective extraction of raw materials, remote monitoring of remote mine sites, automation in mining processes and remediation of waste piles, that achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions contribute to the EU’s climate neutrality agenda. This twofold character of the XTRACT project outcomes, minimising ecological footprints and enhancing raw material security, addresses two of the most urgent challenges of our era and paves the way for a truly circular, low-carbon extractive industry.
