XTRACT, LITHOS & EXCEED Co-Organise Capacity Building Webinar
Joint Horizon Europe Initiative on LCA, S-LCA and TEA for CRM Mining Activities
The Horizon Europe project XTRACT, along with the LITHOS and EXCEED projects, successfully co-organised a joint Capacity Building Webinar on 29 April 2026 focusing on sustainability assessment approaches in mining and processing activities for Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) production.
The webinar aimed to promote knowledge exchange and collaboration among projects working toward sustainable and responsible CRM mining solutions, while providing valuable insights to undergraduate and graduate students, early-stage researchers, and professionals interested in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), and Techno-Economical Assessment (TEA).
The webinar agenda included the following presentations:
- “Introduction to LCA of CRMs: the case of battery-grade lithium production” presented by Dr. Georgios Bartzas (LITHOS project)
- “Sustainable and Cost-Effective Lithium Extraction from Li-bearing Hard Rock Ores: Process Simulation and Techno-Economic Analysis using SUPERPRO Designer” presented by Associate Professor Dimitrios Ipsakis (EXCEED project)
- “From Environmental Thinking to Social Insight: Introducing Social-LCA” presented by Antonia Papadaki, Researcher at the Technical University of Crete (TUC), representing the XTRACT project
Through initiatives such as this webinar, XTRACT continues to strengthen dissemination, stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration within the European critical raw materials sector.
